Atherton is a small town of roughly 7,000 residents, defined by it’s tranquil, wooded, family-friendly neighborhoods, great schools, and high quality of life. It ranks as one of the most expensive and exclusive cities in the United States. Atherton is appreciated for its gorgeous temperate weather, and its convenient vicinity to the big city energy of San Francisco as well as the easy access to the relaxing open spaces, forests and coastal areas of neighboring Peninsula communities.

History

In 1866 a small train stop called Fair Oaks was established between San Francisco and San Jose, to serve those who owned large estates north of Menlo Park. The city of Atherton was officially incorporated in 1923 as a way for the property owners to maintain their community as a strictly residential area. The name Fair Oaks was already in use by another town near Sacramento, so the community chose their name in honor of Faxon Atherton, one of the first European landowners in the South Peninsula.
